Account activity is not the same thing as a statement

TD Bank gives you two separate downloads and they are easy to confuse. Account activity is the live transaction feed, and it exports as a data file. Statements & Documents holds the official monthly statements, and those are PDFs.

For analysing your spending you want the activity export. For proving something to a landlord or a lender, you want the statement.

One clarification before you start: this is TD Bank, the US retail bank. TD Canada Trust and its EasyWeb platform are a different system with different menus, so a guide written for one will not match the other.

Download your account activity

  1. Sign in to TD Bank Online Banking in a desktop browser.
  2. Open the account and go to its account activity.
  3. Select the download option and set your date range.
  4. Choose the file type: CSV for a spreadsheet, or OFX, QFX (Quicken) or QBO (QuickBooks) to import straight into accounting software.

If your software rejects the file, check the extension first — a download saved without the right suffix is one of the most common reasons an import fails before it has even started.

How much history each route gives you

The three windows are quite different. The CSV activity download reaches back roughly a year and a half. The QFX format is usually capped much tighter, often around 90 days. Statement PDFs go back furthest — up to seven years online.

Worth knowing about the CSV: because it comes from the live feed rather than from a closed statement period, it has no running balance, no statement period header and no summary section. It is a list of transactions, nothing more. That is exactly what you want for analysis and exactly what you do not want as a formal record.

Other US accounts handle this their own way — see Chase and Bank of America.

With eighteen months available in a single CSV, the thing to look for is repetition: the same merchant, the same amount, month after month. That is where the subscription you cancelled in your head but never in your account has been quietly renewing.
