Recent activity or billing statement — pick the right one
Amex gives you two different things from the same screen, and choosing the wrong one is the usual source of frustration. Recent activity is a live feed of transactions as they post — that's what you want for spending analysis. A billing statement is the closed, official document for one billing cycle, complete with fees, summaries and rewards data.
The practical difference: activity is available as structured data you can open in a spreadsheet, statements are the document you hand to a lender.
Download your Amex transactions
- Log in to your account at americanexpress.com.
- Go to Account › Statements & Activity.
- Choose the download option from the list on the left of the page.
- Select the period you need, then the file format.
- Confirm to download the file.
Amex lets you download your recent activity and your past six billing statements. If you need to go further back than six cycles, plan on downloading in batches as the cycles close, rather than expecting one big historical export.
Which format to choose
Three destinations are offered: Quicken, QuickBooks, and plain CSV. Unless you actually use Quicken or QuickBooks, take the CSV — it opens in any spreadsheet and in any analysis tool, with one row per transaction.
One caveat worth knowing before you start reconciling: the activity export is a transaction feed, not a reproduction of your statement. Statement summaries, fee breakdowns and Membership Rewards details live in the PDF statement and won't appear in the CSV. If you need those, download the PDF as well.

With the CSV in hand, the interesting part begins: read several cycles back to back and the recurring charges you've stopped noticing surface quickly — dormant subscriptions, services billed twice, prices that crept up without an email.
