One screen, three formats, and a certified option

Starling handles statements entirely in the app, and does it more thoroughly than most. From a single screen you pick the period, the file format, and — this is the unusual part — whether you want a standard or a certified statement.

That distinction matters. A certified statement is the version to request when an institution needs proof: a landlord, a mortgage broker, a visa application. For everything else, including analysing your own spending, the standard statement is what you want.

Download your Starling statement

  1. From the menu, tap Statements and documents.
  2. Select Statement history.
  3. Choose the time period you need.
  4. Select the format — CSV, PDF, or large print PDF.
  5. Choose between a standard or certified statement.

If you need a physical paper copy, Starling doesn't post one: download the statement in the app and print it yourself.

Which format for which job

Take the CSV for anything analytical. It gives one row per transaction and opens directly in a spreadsheet or in accounting software like Xero or FreeAgent, with no conversion step in between.

The PDF is the document to keep for proof, and the large print PDF is a genuinely useful accessibility option that most banks don't bother offering — worth knowing about if small type is a problem for you or for someone whose finances you help manage.

Since everything runs through the app, do the download on the device you actually bank on, then share the file to your computer if that's where you'll work with it.

Among other app-first banks, the process is close at Monzo and at Wise.

With the CSV in hand, the useful move is reading several months in one pass. Recurring charges hide well in a month-by-month view — dormant subscriptions, services billed twice, quiet price rises — and surface almost immediately once you look at a full year at once.
